I have a project on the go and want to use shellac as a sealer. I'd like to know what the recommend cut is for spraying shellac? And for those of you who seal with shellac, how many coats before instrument is sealed? Sealer will be under Nitro.

thanks

Josh

I would use a 2 lb cut or thinner of dewaxed shellac and put on 1 or 2 coats depending on type of wood and sand back vy lightly with 320 grit before applying nitro.

Thanks Ernie. I was thinking a few coats of something between 1-2 lb cut would be good and it sounds like I'm on track. I just wanted to hear from some people who use shellac for sealer on a regular basis.

I brush it on, but shouldn't be too much different than spraying. Like the others said, 1-2# cut, 2 or 3 coats, sand lightly.
If you're filling pores in addition to sealing, 2 or 3 coats & sand back to bare wood a couple of times before the 2 or 3 seal coats.

I spray 2 coats of Zinser seal coat shellac, I used to make 2# cut for this but the seal coat shellac is easier and works just as well. I actually just did this on my Bouzouki built yesterday and started lacquer today.

Just thin it so that it will spray nicely with your outfit. I never measure anything, specifically. I make my shellac rather thick, then thin it with alcohol as necessary for whatever the task is.

I typically do a 1 Lb cut for a spray sealer.
